It has been said that traditional Hindu families arrange for a recital of the most auspicious and revered GARUDA PURANA when a death happens in a Hindu household.
Traditional, religious and Vedic Hindu families arrange for a complete recital of the Garuda Purana (garuda purana comprises of around 19,000 slokas) by a learned Vedic scholar. The recital starts from the day of the death and is continued till the 13th day, when all funeral/ death related religious rituals are completed.
The scriptures state that the recital helps the dead person to get rid of all the sins committed in their life time. In addition the person performing the recital and all the persons who listen to the recital are absolved of all their sins.
A special benefit of this vedic recital is that the recital blesses the continuation of the family tree through creation of a progeny for the dead person's children and grand children.
